Roger Payne started skiing in Scotland in the 1970s.  He skis regularly from his home in western Switzerland, and has used skis on climbing trips in Alaska and Pakistan.  In 1989 he led the expedition that made the first British and New Zealand ascents and a ski descent of Gasherbrum 2 (8035m).

Through his work for the UIAA he has been involved in:

 ●  Agreement on the international scale for avalanche hazard.

 ●  Model instructor training standards.

 ●  Ski mountaineering competitions becoming a part of the UIAA.

 ●  The application for ski mountaineering to be considered for the

programme for the winter Olympic Games.

Roger Payne has developed an avalanche training programme (see www.avalanchetraining.info) and runs avalanche training courses.  He also offers guided off-piste skiing and ski tours (see www.skioff-piste.com).
